LARS ZECH
Stuttgart, 1971
Lars Zech is a sculptor
who has lived and worked in Germany since 1995. His workshop is located in the
town of Gechingen at the northern edge of the Black Forest. Zech’s work is
deeply rooted in the natural world, as nature is the source of both his raw materials
and his inspiration. He only uses tree trunks that come from near his workshop,
which have been cut down due to disease, age or the weather and some are
hundreds of years old. He notes that “seeing all the history of an ancient tree
with missing branches and physical injuries leaves me awestruck, and I feel
that I should take care of it. In using them for my sculptures, I feel that I
am giving them new life, giving them back the energy and majesty that they once
possessed.”
Lars Zech creates bowl sculptures that represent
an immense force and clarity, as they are living entities at rest. The bowl
shape stands for both emptiness and fullness. The final form is less about
function and more about a sculptural decision being made, which is influenced by
the circumstances of the material as well as by the aesthetical view. The
result is driven by the use of conflicting elements, where calm volumes are
interrupted by filigree structures and are jointly described in moving lines,
with their own form and environment.
Looking at the way that Lars Zech creates his
sculptures and wall objects, it becomes clear that he is driven by questions
and views. Similar to a white canvas, he starts with the log and then makes a
series of complex decisions which finally lead to a real, present and authentic
piece of work. It is reflected through the material, the craftsmanship, the
thoughtful identification with it and the resulting forms and contents.
